The Salih Self Development Center is located in the Aboabo district of Kumasi, a city in Ghana’s Ashanti region. Kumasi is the second largest city in Ghana with a population of nearly 2 million (2012). The largest ethnic group in Kumasi is the Ashanti, and approximately 80% of inhabitants are Christian, 5% are Muslim, and a smaller percentage follow traditional beliefs.
History of the region
Commonly known as the “Garden City” for its variety of plant species, Kumasi rose to prominence in 1695 when it became the capital of the Ashanti Confederacy. Kumasi’s once large gold deposits have led to the city to become one of the wealthier ones in Ghana.
